Canis aures
-----------
English: Jackal
German: Goldschakal
French: Chacal commun
Spanish: Chacal comun
Distribution areas
------------------
The jackal is found in South Europe,
central and southern Asia and in the
territories of North and East Africa.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The skin is 55 to 85 cm long; the tail The surface structure
can measure up to 28 cm. The hairs are of the skin, 200x
straight, light grey-brown or red-brown in
colour, with the underfur layer being darker. The back is
black.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin is
furrowed; the hair follicles are narrow with
straight edges. The average follicle
contains a cluster of hair fibres. The fine
fur fibres are from 15 to 25 µm in
diameter. The cross-sectional outline is
elliptical ant the circular scales are of The cuticular structure
the cornet-like type. The scale surface and of the fine fibres, 1000x
scale margins are straight and smooth. The
medulla is narrow, unbroken, central symmetrical-shaped, and is of the
uniserial ladder type. The infilling substance of the medulla is amorphous in
structure.

The intermediate fibres have a diameter
of 25 to 50 µm. The cross-sectional outline
is elliptical and the cuticular scales are
even, tile-like at the bottom parts, while
the upper parts are covered by a wavelike
scales. The surface of the scales is smooth
and their margins are straight. The medulla
is wide, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped. The medulla is of the Longitudinal section
lattice-sponge-like type with foam-like of a fine fur fibre, 3000x
infilling material.
The guard hairs are elliptical in cross-section with a diameter of 50 to
70 µm. The cuticular scales are of an even, tile-like shape in the bottom,
and of a wavelike shape in the upper part of the shaft. The scale surface is
smooth and the margins are straight. These fine fibres have a wide medulla,
unbroken and central symmetrical-shaped. The medullary column is of the
lattice-sponge-like type with the infilling material of a foam-like structure.
