Choloepus didactylus
--------------------
English: Two-toed sloth
German: Zweizehenfaultier
French: Unau commun
Spanish: Perezoso del Brasil
Distribution areas
------------------
The two-toed sloth and other species of
sloth live in South America. The animal
inhabits forest regions in the lowlands of
Guayana and Surinamu.
Description of the fur
---------------------- Longitudinal section
The skins are up to 75 cm long. The hair of a guard hair, 600x
is 35 to 45 mm in length. The colour is
light-grey in the upper part of the body while belly is of green-grey or
brown-grey shades. The tail is not distinguishable.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic skin structure is
furrowed, the follicles are narrow with
straight edges. The average follicle
contains a cluster of fibres.
The fine fur fibres are circular or oval
in cross-sectional outline. The diameter is The cuticular structure
in the range of 20 to 40 µm. The cuticle is of the fine fibres, 1000x
cornet-like with a smooth scale surface and
rippled scale margins. These fine fibres are non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres are from 40 to
65 µm in diameter. These fibres are
aster-like or dumb-bell-shaped in the
cross-section. The overall cuticle
structure is of the rare perforated type
where the cuticle is interrupted by rounded
holes, through which the inner medulla is
visible. The scale margins are rippled, and
the scale surface is smooth. The medulla is Transverse section
wide, broken longitudinally and of the of a guard hair, 3000x
non-central non-regular shape. The medullar
type is of the tabular and sometimes non-regular type. The infilling material
in the medulla is amorphous.
Guard hairs have an aster-like cross-section with a diameter of about 40
to 80 µm. The cuticle surface is smooth and scale margins are rippled. The
structure is of the perforated type of cuticle.
