Chrysocyon brachyurus
---------------------
English: Maned wolf
German: M„hnenwolf
French: Loup a crini‚re
Spanish: Perezoso del Brasil
Distribution areas
------------------
The maned wolf inhabits the whole
continent of South America, but it is very
rare in its natural habitat and is raised in
zoos.
Description of the fur
---------------------- The surface structure
The skins are 125 to 135 cm long; the of the skin, 60x
tail can measure up to 40 cm. The hair coat
is light red-brown in colour; in the neck area is a big darker spot. The
coarse hairs are straight and up to 12 cm long and even more in the mane. The
underfur fibres are not differently coloured and so are not clearly
distinguishable.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is furrowed. The hair follicles are
wide straight edges and the average
follicle contains only one hair shaft.
Fine fur fibres are from 8 to 22 µm in
diameter. The cross-sectional outline is The cuticular structure
circular or elliptical. The cuticular of the fine fibres, 4000x
scales are cornet-like or petal-like with a
regularly grooved pattern on the scale surface and straight scale margins.
The fine fibres are non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres have a diameter
of from 30 to 70 µm. The cross-section is
elliptical and cuticular type is of the
even, tile-like or both, even, tile-like
and rounded, tile-like structure. The scale
surface is smooth and the scale margins are
straight. The medulla is narrow, unbroken
and central symmetrical-shaped and is of

The guard hairs are elliptical in cross-section, with a diameter of 85 to
135 µm. The cuticular scales are an even, tile-like shape with a smooth scale
surface and straight scale margins. The medulla is wide, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped in cross-section. The medullar type is of the
sponge-lattice-like kind. The infilling substance in the medullary column is
foam-like.
