Distribution areas
------------------
The fallow deer can be found throughout
Europe and in East Asia.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The skins are from 114 to 125 cm long;
the tail measures about 16 to 25 cm. The The cuticular structure
winter coat is denser and thicker than the of the fine fibres, 2000x
summer one. The summer coat is coloured
red-brown or yellow-brown with lighter oval spots on the back. These spots
are not visible on the winter pelts. The belly is coloured white. The
individual hairs are straight; the guard hairs are 20 to 28 mm long.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin is
furrowed. The openings of the hair
follicles are narrow with straight edges.
The hairs usually emerge from the follicles
alone.
The fine fur fibres are from 10 to 18 µm The cuticular structure
in diameter and their cross-sections are of a guard hair, 300x
circular in shape. The cuticular scales are
of the cornet-like type, with both the surface and the margins of the scale
being smooth. These fine fur fibres are usually non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres have similar
microscopical features to the guard hairs,
except that their cross-sectional diameters
are smaller, only about 60 to 100 µm.
The guard hairs are elliptical in
cross-sectional outline, and range from 100
to 200 µm in diameter. The cuticular scale
pattern is tile-like with a non-regular The cuticular structure

The medulla of these hairs is of the
predominating type, central symmetrical shaped and unbroken longitudinally.
The medullary pattern is of the symmetrical non-uniform lattice type with and
inner medullar substance with a sheet-like structure.
