Eutamias sibiricus
------------------
English: Burunduk
German: Burunduk
French: Bouroundouk
Spanish: Ardilla Asiatica, burunduk
Distribution areas
------------------
The burunduk is found in Far East Asia,
with the exception of the Kamchatka area. A
smaller number can be found in Middle and
West Asia or in Eastern Europe at higher
altitudes. In North America, a similar
species, the chipmunk (Eutamias quadrivit-
tatus) is found. A group of the fine hairs,

Description of the fur
----------------------
The skins are from 12 to 20 cm and the tail is about 20 cm long. The hair
coat is relatively thin. The back part is yellow-red in colour with five
dark-brown or black stripes, orientated longitudinally and separated by
yellower stripes. The undercoat layer is dark-grey in colour. The upper parts
of the hair fibres are yellow-red or white. The thickness of the coat is from
6 to 8 mm and even more in some body areas.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is furrowed; the hair follicles are
narrow with raised edges. The average
follicle contains from 3 to 15 hairs.
The fine fur fibres are circular in
cross-section with a diameter measuring The surface structure
from 6 to 15 µm. The cuticular scales are of the skin, 200x
cornet-like with a smooth or non-regular
grooved surface and straight scale margins. The medulla is wide, unbroken and
central symmetrical-shaped in cross-section. The overall structure of the
medulla belongs to the uniserial ladder type with a granular infilling
substance.

The intermediate fibres are circular in
cross-section or, in the upper parts of the
shaft, ellipsiodal in outline. The diameter
is from 18 to 30 µm. The cuticular scales
are cornet-like at the bottom, and
petal-like in the middle and upper parts,
of the shaft. The scale surface is
irregularly grooved and the scale margins
are straight. The medullar structure Longitudinal section
belongs to the uniserial ladder type with of a fine fur fibre, 2000x
an amorphous infilling substance.
The guard hairs are circular at the bottom, and ellipsoidal in the middle
and upper parts, of the shaft in cross-sectional outline. The diameter is
from 35 to 80 µm. The upper part at the tip is slightly flattened. The scales
of the cuticle are even tile-like with a smooth scale surface and straight,
sometimes rippled, scale margins. The medulla is wide, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped in cross-section. The overall medullar pattern belongs to
the uniserial ladder type with an amorphous infilling material.
