Distribution areas
------------------
The edible dormouse is found in South
and Central Europe and in Central Asia.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The skins are about 13 cm long. The
underfur layer is distinctly darker than The surface structure
the upper layer of the coat, and it is of the skin, 600x
blue-grey in colour. The coarser hairs are
yellow-brown, on the belly only they are white. The thickness of the
undercoat is about 7 mm and the whole coat is up to 18 mm thick.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is relatively smooth. The hair
follicles are narrow with raised edges. The
average follicle contains two hair shafts.
The fine fur fibres are elliptical or
flattened in cross-section with a diameter The cuticular structure
measuring from 12 to 25 µm. The cuticular of the fine fibres, 2000x
scales are cornet-like with a smooth
surface and straight scale margins. The medulla is wide, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped in cross-section. The overall structure of the medulla is
of the fractured uniserial ladder type with a granular infilling substance.

The intermediate fibres are elliptical
or flattened with a diameter of the
cross-section about 25 to 45 µm. The
cuticular scales are cornet-like at the
bottom, and even, tile-like in the upper
parts, of the shaft. The scale surface is
smooth and the scale margins are straight.
The medulla is wide, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped. The medullar structure The cuticular structure
is of the uniserial ladder type and the of the fine fibres, 1000x
infilling material is of a granular or
amorphous detailed structure.
The guard hairs are circular at the bottom, and elliptical in the middle
and upper parts, of the shaft in cross-sectional outline. The diameter is
from 35 to 80 µm. The scales of the cuticle are even, tile-like with a smooth
surface and straight scale margins.
