Kobus ellipsiprymnus
--------------------
English: Watterbuck
German: Wasserbock
French: Kob de buffon
Spanish: Antilope de agua
Distribution areas
------------------
The waterbuck can be mainly found in
South, Central and West Africa. This animal
is now often bred in zoos in many parts of
the world.
Description of the fur
---------------------- The surface structure
The skins are up to 2 m long. The coat of the skin, 600x
is coarse and red-brown in colour. The
thickness of the coat is in the range of 25 to 30 mm; the hair shafts are
straight and relatively thick.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin is
furrowed. The individual hair follicles are
narrow with straight edges. The average
follicles are single-haired.
The fine fur fibres are straight, with a
diameter of 15 to 22 µm. The cross-sectional The cuticular structure
outline is usually circular and the of the fine fibres, 2000x
cuticular scales are of the cornet-like
type. The scales are usually smooth and the edges are straight. These fibres
are non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres have a diameter
of 20 to 100 µm, and their cross-sectional
outline is circular or elliptical. The
cuticular scales are even, tile-like in
shape with a smooth surface and straight
scale margins. The medulla is wide,
unbroken longitudinally and central
symmetrical shaped in cross-section. The
overall structure of the medulla is of the Transverse section
spongelike type, with a foam-like structure of an intermediate fibre, 2000x
to the infilling substance.
The guard hairs are usually elliptical in cross-section and covered by
crenated, tile-like scales. The cuticular scales have a smooth surface and
crenated scale margins. The medullary column is wide, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped in cross-section. The medullary structure is of the
spongelike type and the infilling substance has either a foam-like or an
amorphous detailed structure.
