German: Schneeziege
French: Ch‚vre des montagnes
rocheuses
Spanish: Cabra de Blainville
Distribution areas
------------------
The rocky mountain goat can be found in
North America, mainly in the area from
South Alaska to North East of USA.
Description of the fur
---------------------- The surface structure
The skins are from 150 to 175 cm long. of the skin, 200x
The coat is dense, with long hairs which
are white or yellow white in colour. Young animals are coloured in brown
shades. The undercoat cannot be distinguished from the top coat. The longest
guard hairs are up to 80 mm long. The coarse hairs are straight, the fine
hairs are moderately curled.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is furrowed. The hair follicles are
wide with straight edges and usually
contain only one hair shaft.
The fine fur fibres are circular in The cuticular structure
cross-section, with a diameter of from 7 to of the fine fibres, 1000x
16 µm. The cuticle is covered by
cornet-like scales with a smooth surface and straight scale margins. These
fine fibres are non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres have a diameter
of from 25 to 60 µm; the cross-section is
circular or elliptical in outline. The
cuticular scales are mosaic-like with
irregularly grooved surfaces and smooth
scale margins. The medullary column is
wide, unbroken and central symmetrical
-shaped in cross-section. The overall The cuticular structure
medullar structure is of the lattice type of the fine fibres, 2000x
with a complex-sheet-like structure to the
infilling substance.
The guard hairs also have circular or elliptical cross-section with a
diameter measuring from 60 to 130 µm. The cuticular scales are of the
mosaic-like type, with an irregularly grooved surface and straight scale
margins. These fibres have a wide medulla, unbroken longitudinally and
situated in the central area of the cross-section symmetrically.
