Distribution areas
------------------
The wild sheep originated in South
-Eastern Europe and has now spread to the
wooded regions ofthe whole continent. About
eleven species of wild sheep are found in
the northern hemisphere.
Description of the fur Longitudinal section
---------------------- of a guard hair, 300x
The skins are from 80 to 150 cm long,
covered by a coarse and dense coat. In summer, the coat is yellow-brown or
red-brown in colour; in the winter season, the colour is dark, nearly black,
and only the belly is white. The length of the hair fibres is from 25 to 60
mm; the winter coat has a mane with hairs up to 80 to 110 mm long.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is furrowed, and the hair follicles
are narrow with straight edges. The average
follicle contains only one hair shaft.
The fine fur fibres have a circular
cross-section. The diameter is from 18 to The surface structure
25 µm and the cuticular scales are of the skin, 40x
cornet-like with and irregularly grooved
surface and straight margins. These fine fibres are non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres are not
distinguishable from guard hairs. Both
fibre types are very similar in structure
and cover a range of diameters from 100 to
300 µm.
The guard hairs and other similar
coarser fibres are ellipsoidal or
flat-shaped in cross-section, except at the Transverse section
bottom where the shafts have a circular of a guard hair, 200x
outline. The cuticular scales are even
tile-like in the lower part, and mosaic-like in the middle and upper parts,
of the shaft. The scale surface is non-regularly grooved and the margins are
straight. In the winter coat, these fibres have a predominating type of
medulla, but, in the summer season, some coarse fibres may have a wide
medulla. The medullar column is unbroken, central symmetrical-shaped and
belongs to the symmetrical non-uniform lattice type. The detailed structure
of the infilling material in the medullar column is sheet-like.
