Distribution areas
------------------
The American bison lives in the prairie
of North America. This animal is often
raised in zoos.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The hide of the mature animal is up to The cuticular structure
280 cm long, dark brown or red-brown in of the fine fibres, 600x
colour, the back is sometimes coloured
black. The hairs are straight and coarse.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is furrowed; the hair follicles are
wide with straight edges, and usually
contain only one hair shaft.
The fine fur fibres, which are scarce,
are circular or elliptical in cross-section Longitudinal section
and the diameter measures between 8 and of an intermediate fibre, 600x
16 µm. The cuticular scales are cornet-like
with a smooth surface and straight scale margins. These fine fibres are non-
medullated.

The intermediate fibres and the guard
hairs are similar in microscopic structure.
These are elliptical in cross-section and
the diameter measures between 65 and 130
µm. The cuticular scales are even,
tile-like with a smooth surface and
straight scale margins. The medullary
column is narrow in intermediate fibres,
but wide in coarser guard hairs. The Longitudinal section
medulla is central symmetrical-shaped and of an intermediate fibre, 600x
unbroken longitudinally. The medulla is of
the sponge-lattice-like type with the infilling material of a fine porous
structure.
