Distribution areas
------------------
The antelope bongo is found in West
Africa in the prairie and forest areas.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The skins are about 1.5 m long. The coat
of the bongo is distinctive coloured; in The surface structure
the head and neck parts it is red-brown, of the skin, 400x
the back is black-brown, and there are
white stripes under the eyes and white spots above the eyes.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The uppermost layer of the epidermis is
covered by parallel grooves of variable
depth. The hair follicles are wide and the
edges are sunk below the level of the skin
surface. The average follicle contains only
one hair shaft.
The cuticular structure
The fine fur fibres are circular or of an intermediate hair, 2000x
elliptical in cross-section. The cuticle is
covered by even, tile-like scales with a smooth scale surface and straight
scale margins. The fine fur fibres are non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres are circular and
elliptical in cross-section with a diameter
at the widest section of 40 to 70 µm. The
fibres are covered by even, tile-like
scales, at the upper parts the scales are
crenated. The scale surface is smooth, the
edges straight and also rippled. These
hairs are non-medullated.
Transverse section
The guard hairs are from 70 to 120 µm in of an intermediate fibre, 600x
diameter. The cross-sectional outline is
circular at the bottom, but elliptical in the upper part of the shaft. The
cuticular scales are either even, tile-like or crenated, tile-like with a
smooth surface and straight, in upper parts rippled, scale margins.
