Daubentonia madagascarensis

English: Aye-aye
German: Fingertier
French: Aye-aye
Spanish: Ayeaye
Distribution areas
------------------
The aye-aye is very rare animal living in
the forest of Madagascar.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The skin is from 35 to 40 cm long; the
tail is about 47 cm long. The underfur The cuticular structure
layer is dense, light-yellow in colour and of the fine fibres, 2000x
composed with very fine fibres. The guard
hairs are black in upper part, but white in lower half of the fibre. These
hairs are straight and about 28 mm long.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The skin surface is furrowed; the hair
follicles are narrow with straight edges.
The majority of the follicles contain a
cluster of hairs.
The fine fur fibres are 12 to 18 µm in
diameter. The cross-sectional outline is Transverse section
circular at the bottom of the fibre, but in of a fine fur fibre, 2000x
the middle and upper parts, it is
elliptical. The lowest part of the cuticle is covered with cornet-like scales
but the predominant type of scales is petal-like. The scale surface is smooth
and the scale margins are straight. The medulla is wide, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped, and is of the loose, uniserial ladder type with an
amorphous and foam-like infilling substance.

The intermediate fibres are elliptical
in cross-section and the cuticle is covered
with wavelike scales having a smooth
surface and straight margins. The medullary
column is wide, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped in the cross-sectional
outline. The overall medullary type is of
the lattice pattern with an amorphous and
foam-like infilling material. Longitudinal section

The guard hairs are elliptical in cross
-sectional outline and 75 to 100 µm in diameter. The cuticle is of the
crenated, tile-like type with smooth scale surface and rippled scale margins.
The medullary column is wide, unbroken longitudinally and central
symmetrical-shaped in cross-section. The medulla is of the lattice-type and
the infilling material is of an amorphous or foam-like structure.
