Distribution areas

The mara is found in South American
territories up to a latitude of about 37
degrees South.
Description of the Fur
----------------------
The skins are from 35 to 45 cm long. The The surface structure
coat is dense, but short, brown-grey in of the skin, 200x
colour in the back part of the body. The
sides are red-brown and the belly is white. The undercoat is not visible, the
hairs are straight in shape. The maximum length of the hairs is about 35 mm.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic surface of the skin is
smooth with narrow follicles having
straight upper edges. The hairs grow in
groups, but emerge from follicle single.
The fine fur fibres are circular in
cross-section, with a diameter of 12 to 30 A group of the fine hairs,
µm. In the upper part the hairs are 200x
elliptical in cross-section. The pattern of
the cuticular scales is cornet-like with a smooth scale surface and straight
margins. The medulla is narrow, unbroken and central symmetrical-shaped. The
overall structure of the medulla is of the uniserial ladder type, with an
amorphous infilling substance.

The intermediate fibres are elliptical
and in the upper part sickle-shaped in
cross-section. The cuticular scales are
cornet-like in the bottom part of the
shaft, while in the upper parts they are
often rounded, tile-like in shape. The
scale surface is smooth, and sometimes
irregularly grooved. The scale margins are
straight. These fibres have a wide medulla, The cuticular structure

cross-sectional outline. The medullary
column is of the lattice type with a sheet-like structure to the infilling
substance.

The guard hairs have a diameter of 50 to
