Felis silvestris

English: Wild cat
German: Wildkatze
French: Chat sauvage
Spanish: Gato mont‚s
Distribution areas
------------------
The wild cat is found throughout Europe
with the exception of Scandinavia. In Asia
and in Africa, a number of different
varieties of wild cat are found.
Description of the fur (Cont. var.)
----------------------------------- A group of hairs of the fine
The skin is from 70 to 100 cm long. The and guard type, 600x
hair coat is dense, the under-fur layer is
blue-grey in colour, and the guard hairs are grey, brown or yellow-brown.
Some species of wild cat are uniformly coloured but the coat is mostly
striped or spotted. The under-fur layer is usually 10 to 20 mm thick; the
longest guard hairs measure about 40 to 45 mm.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is furrowed; the hair follicles are
narrow with raised edges, and contain
clusters of fibres.
The fine fur fibres are circular in
cross-section, with a diameter of 10 to 25 The cuticular structure
µm. The cuticle is covered by cornet-like of the fine fibres, 2000x
scales with a smooth surface and straight
scale margins. The medulla is wide, unbroken, central symmetrical-shaped and
the overall structure belongs to the uniserial ladder type. The medullar
infilling substance is granular or amorphous in detailed structure.

The intermediate fibres have a diameter
of 20 to 70 µm; the cross-section is
circular or ellipsoidal in outline. The
cuticular scales are even tile-like or flat
edge-shaped, with a smooth or grooved
surface and straight scale margins. The
medulla is wide, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped in cross-section. The
overall structure is of the uniserial The surface structure
ladder type with a perforated sheet-like of the skin, 300x
medullar infilling substance.
The guard hairs also have a circular or ellipsoidal cross-section with a
diameter measuring from 60 to 100 µm. The cuticular scales are of the
crenated tile-like type, with a smooth scale surface and rippled scale
margins. The medulla is wide, unbroken and symmetrically situated in the
central axial area of the shafts. The overall medullar structure belongs to
the spongy-lattice-type with a foam-like infilling substance.
