Fennecus zerda

German: Fennek, w《ten-fuchs
French: Fennec
Spanish: Feneco
Distribution areas
------------------
The fennec can be found in desert areas
of North Africa and Asia Minor.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The skins are from 30 to 45 cm and the
tail is about 20 cm long. The hair coat is The surface structure
dense and relatively fine. The back is of the skin, 60x
yellow-red in colour and the belly part is
white. The underfur layer is light-grey in colour and about 8 to 12 mm thick.
The undercoat fibres are moderately crimpled, but the guard hairs are
straight.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is furrowed; the hair follicles are
narrow with straight edges. The average
follicle contains cluster of 5 to 10 hairs.
The fine fur fibres are from 7 to 18 µm
in diameter. The cross-sectional outline is A group of the fine hairs,
circular at the bottom, and straight-sided 600x
in the main shaft. The cuticular scales are
cornet-like close to the skin surface but most of the cuticle consists of
raised edge-shaped scales. The scale surface is smooth; the margins are
straight. The medulla is wide, unbroken and central symmetrical-shaped in
cross-section. The overall structure of the medulla is of the uniserial
ladder type with a granular infilling substance.

The intermediate fibres are elliptical
in cross-sectional outline and have
diameter between 35 and 55 µm. The
cuticular scales are wavelike in the main
shaft but at the bottom are even,
tile-like. The scale surface and scale
margins are smooth. The medulla is wide,
unbroken and central symmetrical-shaped.

The guard hairs have a diameter of 50 to 85 µm. The cross-sectional
outline is elliptical. The cuticular scales are even, tile-like and crenated,
tile-like at the top of the shafts. The scale surface is smooth; the scale
margins are straight, or rippled in the upper parts of the shaft. The medulla
is wide, unbroken and central symmetrical-shaped in cross-section. The
overall medullar structure is of the sponge-lattice-like type with a
sheet-like infilling substance.
