Distribution areas
------------------
The glutton is found in the tundra and
forests of North Europe, North Asia and
North America.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The skin is from 65 to 100 cm long; the The cuticular structure
tail measures about 18 to 23 cm. The coat of an intermediate hair, 600x
is dense and thick. The undercoat and
upper-coat are not distinguishable. Distinct geographic colour varieties
occur. It is coloured in all shades of brown, from light-brown to black-brown
and the shades differ also over the whole body. On the neck and back, and
also on the legs, the coat is darker than in other parts of the body. The
coarser hairs are up to 70 cm long.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface appears furrowed. The hair
follicles are narrow and the edges are
straight. Usually, the follicles contain
clusters of fibres.
The fine fur fibres are circular or The cuticular structure
elliptical in cross-section, and are of a guard hair, 600x
covered by cornet-like scales having a
smooth surface and straight scale edges. These fine fibres are
non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres are from 35 to
70 µm in diameter. The cross-sectional
outline is circular but it is elliptical in
the upper part of the fibres. The cuticular
scales are comb-like. The scale surface is
smooth and scale margins are straight. The
medulla is wide, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped in cross-section. The
medullary structure is of the Longitudinal section
lattice-sponge type and the infilling of a guard hair, 200x
substance is sheet-like or foam-like in the
detailed structure.
The guard hairs have a diameter of 60 to 125 µm. The cross-sectional
outline is circular or elliptical. The cuticular scales are even, tile-like
in the bottom, but crenated, tile-like in the main part of the hair shafts.
The scale surface is smooth and the scale margins are straight, or more
often, crenated.

The medullary column is wide, central
symmetrical in cross-section and unbroken
longitudinally. The overall medullary type
is of the lattice-sponge-like, and the
