Distribution areas
------------------
The white-handed gibon and other species
of Hylobates live in East India and in
Indonesia.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The skins are from 70 to 90 cm long. The The surface structure
fur coat consists of long, grey-black of the skin, 300x
hairs, the head and upper parts of the legs
are white-grey. The undercoat layer is not distinguishable; the largest
coarse hairs are up to 75 mm long.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is furrowed and the hair follicles
are narrow, with the inner sheath
protruding. The average follicle contains
only one hair shaft.
The fine fur fibres are circular and, in The cuticular structure
the upper parts of the shaft, may be of the fine fibres, 2000x
elliptical in cross-section. The diameter
is in the range of 10 to 20 µm. The cuticular scales are cornet-like with a
smooth surface and straight scale margins. These fibres are non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres are elliptical
in cross-section and the diameter is
between 25 and 45 µm. The cuticular scales
are even, tile-like in shape with a smooth
surface and straight scale margins. These
fibres are non-medullated.
The guard hairs are elliptical in cross
section; the diameter is between 45 and 60 The cuticular structure
µm. The cuticle has even, tile-like scales of an intermediate hair, 1000x
with a smooth surface and straight scale
margins. The guard hairs are without the medullary column.
