Distribution areas
------------------
The southern coati is found in South
America as far south as Paraguay.
Description of the fur
----------------------
Southern coati skin is about 55 cm long;
the tail is up to 45 cm in length. The coat The surface structure
is dense and soft and is in different of the skin, 60x
shades of red-brown and yellow-brown. Over
the eyes are oval white spots; the tail is covered by yellow-brown and black
-brown rings. The undercoat is light-brown in colour, the upper parts of the
guard hairs are coloured dark-brown. The hairs are straight.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is of the regularly grooved type;
the follicles are narrow with straight
edges. The number of hair shafts in each
follicle is from one to three.
The fine fur fibres are elliptical or The cuticular structure
circular in cross-section. The diameter of of the fine fibres, 600x
the fine fibres is in the range of 15 to 35
µm. The cuticular scales are cornet-like or even, tile-like with a smooth
surface and straight scale margins. The medullary column is narrow, unbroken
and central symmetrical shaped. The overall medullary structure is of the
uniserial ladder type with an amorphous structure of the infilling substance.

The intermediate fibres have a diameter
of 30 to 45 µm. The cross-sectional outline
is elliptical and the cuticle is covered by
even, tile-like scales. The scale surface
is irregularly grooved and scale margins
are straight. The medulla is of the narrow
type, unbroken and central symmetrical
shaped in cross-section. This medulla is of
the lattice-sponge-like type with an The cuticular structure
amorphous or foam-like structure to the of an intermediate hair, 2000x
infilling medullar substance.
The guard hairs are elliptical in cross-sectional outline. Their diameter
is in the range of 50 to 110 µm. The cuticular scales are of the crenated
tile-like type and the scale surface is smooth with rippled scale margins.
The medulla is narrow, central symmetrical-shaped in cross-section and
longitudinally broken. The medullary column is of the non-regular type. The
infilling medullary substance is amorphous in detailed structure.
