Pan troglodytes
---------------
English: Chimpanzee
German: Schimpanse
French: Chimpanz‚
Spanish: Chimpance
Distribution areas
------------------
The animal lives in West and Central
Africa in many areas, mainly in forests
around rivers. The chimpanzee is often kept
in zoos.
Description of the fur
---------------------- The cuticular structure
The skins is from 120 to 180 cm long. of a guard hair, 600x
The hair coat is black in colour. The
fibres are straight, long and the undercoat is not visible. The density of
the coat is low, especially in the belly region.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is relatively smooth; the hair
follicles are narrow with straight edges,
and on average are single haired.
The fine fur fibres are circular in
cross-section, with a diameter of 10 to 30 The cuticular structure
µm. The cuticle is covered by cornet-like, of a guard hair, 2000x
or even, tile-like scales, with a smooth
surface and straight scale margins. These fine fibres are non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres have similar
microscopic features to the guard hairs,
except that their cross-sectional diameters
are smaller, only about 30 to 60 µm, while
the guard hairs are 60 to 120 µm in
diameter.
The cross-sectional outline is circular
or elliptical, and the cuticular-scale Transverse section
pattern is the crenated, tile-like. The of a guard hair, 600x
cuticular scale surface is smooth and scale
margins are rippled. The medulla is narrow, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped in cross-section. The overall medullary structure is of
the non-regular type with an amorphous or foam-like structure to the
infilling substance.
