Rusa unicolor
-------------
English: Sambar
German: Indischer sambar
French: Sambar de l'Inde
Spanish: Alce
Distribution areas
------------------
The sambar is found in South Asia, in
India, Ceylon, Burma and Malaya. This
animal is often raised in zoos.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The skins are from 120 to 160 cm long The surface structure
and the tail is about 18 cm long. The hair of the skin, 60x
is dense and relatively thick, the length
of the guard hairs is up to 50 mm long and even more in some body areas (in
the neck). The fibres are straight and coarse. The underfur layer is not
distinguishable. The coat is grey-brown in colour.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is smooth; the hair follicles are
wide with straight edges. The average
follicle is single-haired.
The fine fur fibres are circular in
cross-section with a diameter measuring The cuticular structure
from 14 to 20 µm. The cuticular scales are of the fine fibres, 2000x
cornet-like with a smooth surface and
straight scale margins. These fine fibres are non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres are elliptical
in cross-section and the diameter is from
120 to 200 µm. The cuticular scales are
even tile-like with a smooth surface and
straight scale margins. The medulla is
wide, unbroken and central symmetrical
-shaped in cross-section. The medullary
column is of the lattice type, or in upper
part also of the non-symmetrical non-uniform The cuticular structure
lattice type and the infilling material is of a guard hair, 1000x
of the complex-sheet-like structure.
The guard hairs are elliptical and the diameter of the cross-section is
from 200 to 350 µm. The cuticular scales are even tile-like at the bottom,
and crenated, tile-like in middle and upper parts, of the shaft. The scale
surface is smooth and scale margins are straight. The medulla is wide,
unbroken longitudinally and it is situated in the central axial area of the
hair shaft symmetrically.

The overall medullary type belongs to the
non-symmetrical non-uniform lattice type and
the infilling substance is complex-sheet
-like.
