Spanish: Oso armiguero
Distribution areas
------------------
The tamandua is found in wooded areas of
Central America, mainly in Paraguay and
Brazil and surrounding countries.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The skins are about 60 cm long; the tail The surface structure
about 40 cm. The hairs are coarse and of the skin, 40x
straight, light-grey in colour. On the back
and the sides the hair coat is black in colour. The longest guard hairs are
about 8 cm long. The underfur layer is light-grey in colour, while it is

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is smooth. The hair follicles are
wide with straight edges. The average
follicle contains only one hair shaft.
The fine fur fibres are circular in
cross-section, with a diameter of 10 to 20 The cuticular structure
µm. The cuticular scales are cornet-like of the fine fibres, 200x
with a smooth surface and straight margins.
These fibres are non-medullated.
The intermediate fibres and guard hairs are similar in shape. The
intermediate type is circular in cross-section; the diameter is between 45
and 55 µm. The cuticular scales are even tile-like, only in upper parts the
scales are crenated tile-like in shape. The scale surface is smooth and scale
margins are straight, or crenated in the upper part of the shaft. The
intermediate fibres are non-medullated.

The guard hairs are circular, or
elliptical in the cross-section. The
cuticular scales are even tile-like in the
lower part, but in the middle and upper
parts are crenated tile-like in shape. The
surface of the scales is smooth, the scale
margins are straight or rippled. Also these
fibres are without a medullary structure.
