Tapirus indicus
---------------
English: Malayan-tapir
Gernam: Schabrackentapir
French: Tapir de l'Inde
Spanish: Tapir de la India
Distribution areas
------------------
The Malayan-tapir is found in South East
Asia, mainly in Malayan peninsula and in
Siam, and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo.
Description of the fur
----------------------
The skins are from 200 to 280 cm long. The surface structure
The coat is black but, in the middle part of the skin, 200x
of the back is white-grey area, which
spreads to the sides. The hair shafts are lustrous and straight. The
thickness of the coat is uniform over the body surface and the guard hairs
are up to 20 mm long.

Structure of the hair
---------------------
The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is smooth; the hair follicles are
narrow with straight edges and in the
average are single haired.
The fine fur fibres are from 12 to 20 µm
in diameter. The cross-sectional outline is Transverse section
circular and the cuticular scales are of a fine fur fibre, 600x
cornet-like with a smooth scale surface and
straight scale margins. These fibres are non-medullated.

The intermediate fibres are circular or
elliptical in cross-section and the
diameter is 40 to 60 µm. The cuticular
scales are even, tile-like with a smooth
surface and straight scale margins. The
medullary column is visible only in the
middle and upper parts, of the shafts. The
medulla is narrow, unbroken and central
symmetrical-shaped. The overall structure Transverse section
of the medulla is of the lattice-sponge-like of an intermediate fibre, 600x
type with the structure of the infilling
material being either foam-like or an amorphous.
The guard hairs are elliptical in cross-section, with a diameter of 60 to
195 µm. The cuticular scales are even, tile-like or crenated, tile-like with
a smooth surface and rippled scale margins. The medulla is narrow, unbroken
and central symmetrical-shaped in cross-section. The medullary structure is
of the lattice-sponge-like type with a foam-like or an amorphous structure of
the infilling substance.
